Introduction
Liang Jiang, a distinguished researcher at the National Art Museum of China and the China National Academy of Painting, former Deputy Director of the National Art Museum of China, and former Director of the Art Research Institute of the Chinese National Academy of Arts, has dedicated himself to art research and creation since the late 1970s. Over his 50-year career, Liang Jiang has made profound contributions to Guangdong’s art scene and national academic fields, earning widespread acclaim both within and beyond the art world. His practice seamlessly integrates calligraphy, painting, and scholarly research, with works exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the National Art Museum of China, Yanhuang Art Museum, National Museum of China, and international venues. In recent years, he has held over a dozen solo exhibitions and published collections like Selected Calligraphy and Paintings of Liang Jiang. Additionally, Liang has spearheaded major national art research and exhibition projects, wielding significant influence in academia and the arts. His scholarly insights inform his artistic practice, while his creative work enriches his theoretical explorations, forging a symbiotic relationship between intellect and artistry.
Titled The Cosmos in Motion: Liang Jiang’s “Scholar Art” Retrospective (50 Years) · Guangzhou Exhibition, this showcase is divided into four thematic sections: “Artistic Journey,” “Reaching New Heights,” “Scholarship Informing Calligraphy,” and “Emotion Transformed into Painting.” Featuring over 100 works and archival materials, the exhibition comprehensively traces Liang Jiang’s 50-year career, presenting his artistic evolution, art-historical writings, calligraphy, and paintings. It illuminates the lifelong journey of a scholar-artist committed to relentless exploration.

About Artist

Researcher at the National Art Museum of China and China National Academy of Painting, PhD supervisor, and member of multiple national expert committees, including the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Expert Database, the Yangtze River Scholars Program Review Panel under the Ministry of Education, and the National Art Fund Evaluation Committee. Former Deputy Director of the National Art Museum of China, Director of the Art Research Institute of the Chinese National Academy of Arts, Vice Chair of the Chinese Artists Association’s Theory Committee, and Director of the Modern Chinese Art Research Institute at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Notable roles include Jury Member and Forum Convener for the 2016 Brazil Olympic Fine Arts Congress, Chief Planning Committee Member for the 2012 London Olympic Fine Arts Congress, and Council Member of the 7th Chinese Artists Association.
Liang Jiang graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts with a degree in oil painting before earning his master’s and doctoral degrees from the Chinese National Academy of Arts. He previously served as Editor-in-Chief of Guangzhou Literature and Art月刊, Editorial Director of Art月刊, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Oriental月刊, and Artistic Director of the China Art Expo. During his academic career, he contributed to major national research projects such as The History of Chinese Art, The Comprehensive History of Chinese Art, and The Complete Works of Huang Binhong. His publications include A History of Chinese Art Connoisseurship, Records of Guangdong’s Art Scene, New Explorations in Art Theory, and Essays from Xiqiao, alongside over 4 million characters of academic essays.
For over five decades, Liang Jiang has balanced calligraphy, painting, and scholarly pursuits. His works have been exhibited at the National Art Museum of China, Yanhuang Art Museum, National Museum of China, and international venues. Recent years have seen over a dozen solo exhibitions and the publication of multiple art collections, including Selected Calligraphy and Paintings of Liang Jiang.
Opening hours: every Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17: 00 (admission is closed at 16: 30 and clearance is started at 16:45).
