Introduction
In 2025, the exhibition Shared Treasures: A Joint Collection Exhibition of Art Museums from Guangdong will be co-initiated by the Guangdong Art Museum Association and the Guangdong Museum of Art, in collaboration with more than ten art museums in the province. From the 1970s when the Shenzhen Exhibition Hall (precursor to the Shenzhen Art Museum) opened new channels for cross-cultural dialogue in southern China, to the turn of the century when institutions such as the Guangdong Museum of Art, the Guan Shanyue Art Museum, and the He Xiangning Art Museum helped shape academic discourse and provide platforms for local artistic narratives, to the recent emergence of new and diverse practices by the He Art Museum, the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning, and the China Printmaking Museum, as well as the sustained commitment of art museums in Zhuhai, Jiangmen, Zhongshan, Dongguan, and Chaozhou to the collection and interpretation of regional art—over the course of decades, the network of art museums in Guangdong has consistently embraced the spirit of “openness, inclusiveness, integrity, and innovation,” bearing witness to the evolution of Lingnan art and contributing to its contemporary expressions.
The history of modern and contemporary art in Guangdong is itself a cultural scroll unfolding in resonance with the fate of the nation. In the early 20th century, the Lingnan School of Painting sought to reconcile Chinese and Western traditions, breaking through the impasse of traditional Chinese painting. During the period of the War of Resistance Against Japan, printmakers wielded carving tools like pens, engraving the soul of the people into wood and stone. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, realist expressions across prints, oil paintings, and sculptures conveyed deep humanistic warmth. Since the Reform and Opening-up, the surging tides of the era have fostered a flourishing and pluralistic artistic ecology. This exhibition features the literati elegance and expressive brushwork of Guangdong-born masters such as Guan Shanyue, and He Xiangning, as well as works by national masters like Qi Baishi,Fu Baoshi,and Liu Haisu. It also includes experimental explorations by contemporary artists such as Yu Hong and Ding Yi. It is both a heartfelt reflection on the traditions of national art and a multidimensional dialogue of contemporary narratives.
