Jongkyu Park is an important representative figure in contemporary Korean art, whose creations span multiple fields such as painting, installation, and media art. Born in Daegu, South Korea in 1966, he graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Keimyung University and later pursued further studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, thereby establishing an artistic system that combines an international perspective with a personal language.

Long focused on the concept of “nothingness” in Eastern philosophy and the binary logic in Western information systems, Park tried to respond to the existential paradox of “being within non-being” through visual language. In his artistic practice, “bitstream” is a key imagery that runs through, referring both to the rhythm of data transmission and symbolizing the basic unit of human perception and existence.

This exhibition focuses on the multiple pulsations that constitute the rhythm of human life—including the heartbeat of the body, the flow of consciousness, and the silent transmission of digital signals. With the concept of “phantom,” Jongkyu Park connects the rhythm of life with the vibration of data, constructing a narrative structure that transcends the senses. What he concerns himself with are those “phantomized” states of existence that are gradually overlooked in a technological society but still operate potentially. In the images composed of digital fragments, viewers may “see” a silently beating heart; in the delayed gaps of time, they may “hear” the echo of movements left by a vanished body. This exhibition is not a recollection of the past, but an inquiry into the present: in the contemporary context where technology and the body, memory and time, reality and virtuality are constantly overlapping, how should we rethink those forms of existence that seem to have disappeared but remain present?

Jongkyu Park

Born in Daegu, South Korea, in 1966. His signature series—including Vertical Time, ~Kreuzen, Beacon Code, Embodiment, and Encoding—demonstrate a restrained elegance and conceptual depth. His work frequently explores the intersections between time and space, memory and presence, digital systems and human sensibility. In particular, the Vertical Time series transforms temporal strata into visual form, reflecting an ongoing engagement with the sublime dimension of time. Throughout his career, he has maintained a strong exhibition presence both in Korea and internationally. His recent solo exhibitions include The Age of Ghosts and Ghosts at Hakgojae Gallery, Seoul (2023), and Encodings II at GOODSPACE, Daegu (2024). He has also participated in major international art fairs such as Art Basel Hong Kong and The Armory Show in New York, earning him increasing global recognition.
