Zhang Xiaotao

Work from Zhang Xiaotao
The scars of time from the mural of Yuan Dynasty have always obsessed me. The
scars trigger my thoughts, all kinds of thoughts. They are the starting point of
my language. It is a trip for me to express and watch the ancient paintings once
again. It produces an insecure feeling: just like what we feel as we sneaked in
the dark night, full of pleasure and horror. This is a metaphor of
multi-dimension. And that is why I put five figures to travel through the Tan
City at the end of my animation, which resembles the different encounter and
ending in the same time channel in Inception. It has something to do with not
only the psychology, but also reality, history, and the multiple virtual worlds.
That requires a meditation and discovery of the author. I am on my way of
discovery. Artists offer a space for imagination and meditation rather than
answers. From the view of a Buddhist the world is a defined one. But we need to
see and think in different angles. And that fit the logic of every viewer. I
have no interest to give a standard answer in my works. I prefer an open ending
and let the thoughts of artists and audiences extend this open
ending.
