Series of Light Brown 2012
Series of Light Brown from Wang Yigang
I worked on Series of Light Brown after 2010. After thirty years of policy changes to a more open China, we have begun to think back on this period. Under the process of globalization we have experienced a process going from imitation to an innovative self-expression. We have deepened the value and meaning of traditional oriental culture through such a process. The adoption of a more traditional culture is not limited to only visual and cultural conception, but neither is it just about self-examination. The key is that we maintain the value of oriental aesthetics within our traditions adding a careful combination of contemporary expressions and skills. Given our understanding and comments on western contemporary abstract art, I have made Series of Light Brown to reflect my thoughts on the cultures of the East and West. The two cultures are set on a big platform then combined and obfuscated culturally and visually. This is done with a hope that it can form a new visual and emotional background in my works and reflect the contemporary skill and traditional Chinese arts. It is a painting of eclecticism, perfectly expressing the Chinese philosophy: to develop in a vague and uncertain state. Painting is the expression of process and emotion within which a memory of traditional culture and a feeling of my daily life is combined.
The title has expressed my thoughts of traditional painting skills. The
manner of variegation in Chinese painting is simple and poetic. Only two ways
have been adopted to present the four seasons. Light brown represents autumn and
winter, while green represents spring and summer. In this work, viewers can find
the brown feelings of autumn.
