Break the Shackles: Practice Leads

Nanfang Daily News (Intern Journalist/Zhou Yu, Trainee/Zeng Meifen)   After the inauguration exhibition and a series of project exhibitions are held, the theme exhibition of the 4th Guangzhou Triennial will be officially unveiled on September 28th 2012. With the meanings of “Unseen Object, Unseen Event, Unseen Faith, Unseen Realm and Unseen Change”, the theme exhibition is titled “the Unseen” and curated by Jiang Jiehong, professor of Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, and Jonathan Watkins, curator of the 11th Sydney Biennale and director of IKON Gallery. Different from a typical theme-led exhibition, the curators will adopt a practice-led approach for this exhibition. Jiang Jiehong thought that “predefined concept becomes a trap for curating.” He encouraged artists to focus on creation and visual effect.

Nearly 80 artists, some current blue-chip while the others from 17th and 18th centuries, will participate in this exhibition. Every week 3 to 4 names of participating artists would be released through Weibo.

How could we face such a baffling reality when modern, post-modern and contemporary artworks are shown in the same room? The both curators tried to explore this issue in the exhibition. As practice leads an exhibition, what kind of artists and exhibition can people find? “The idea about art mirror our way of thinking.” Jiang said. The works will not be enveloped in the museum this time. Shopping mall and outdoor public place will become venues too. “The exhibition will be held in Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou Opera House, Guangdong Provincial Museum, and Museum of Art of Vanguard Square, may even on a plane!”
