Introduction of works:

Twelve Stones, granite installation, variable size, 2011-2012

In Shi Jinsong’s work, there has always been an unknown power and sometimes combative mood hidden behind the images. Their beauty of violence seemingly started to freeze, particularly in his 2008 Huashan Project, where all objects and surfaces in the space were excessively worn down, from the floor, stairs, wall to ceiling, including tables, chairs, benches, a variety of kitchen wares and other objects used on a daily basis. What kind of power, natural or human, has this space experienced through time? The mechanical polishing process deliberately changes their physical shapes and forms, as an acceleration or visualisation of the otherwise invisible changes – a fabrication of the time.

The new work, Twelve Stones, is indeed another ‘lie’. It not only presents confusion about the age of the stones, but also conceals all the artistic labour paid for the realisation of the pieces – the ‘unseen’ achievement made by the ‘unseen’ efforts. In fact, the twelve stones, big or small, were all born originally from one entire piece of raw marble. They appear different at first glance, but after close observation, they look exactly the same in shape, colour and even texture details like a set of identical doztuplets. They seem to be perfectly ‘natural’, although each has been artificially carved to imitate the same model stone from another piece of marble.

In Exodus, God told the Israelites through Moses that, “if you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it.” It is clear that, to construct a satisfactory altar for God, every single stone has to remain in the form originally designed by God, without any additional man-made carving, dressing or decoration derived from human intelligence and pride. The artist spent months learning from and imitating the exemplar stone formed by nature and carved the twelve stones into a specific conformity, a ‘natural’ and ‘unnatural’ one.
