Light of Modernity: The oil painting of Tuscany, Italy 1850-1950

录入时间: 2013-12-16

As the cradle of the European Renaissance, Tuscany, a region in central Italy, is a fruitful land of culture and art. From the 19th to the 20th century, a cultural movement highlighting Naturalism swept across Europe while a collision between the traditional and the new schools of painting
took place.

Focusing on typical works by Tuscan artists, the oil painting exhibit Light of Modernity will reveal the aesthetics of Italian artists and their work, highlighting characteristics of art during those centuries.

Unlike those from the traditional schools of painting, Tuscan artists show Naturalism and Realism
through both the skills and styles of their paintings.

They capture the subtle relationship between natural light and color, depicting real life scenes and landscapes through the pursuit of showing real and natural colors. The shift from lamplight to natural light, from emphasizing decoration to natural status marks the realistic and simple style of the Tuscan artists’ paintings.
The group opened the creation of Italy’s modern art by expressing the language of light, and was greatly influenced by other schools of art such as Impressionism in particular.

The exhibit will be presented in five parts: landscapes, waterscapes, people, objects, and other kinds of paintings, respectively.

In the landscapes part, views depicted in the paintings vary from Italy to other foreign countries. Those pieces not only reflect Tuscan artists’ achievement in capturing light, but also show a hint for visitors to learn the relationship between Tuscan painting and the cultural movement of that time.

Livorno, the Tuscan gateway to the Mediterranean Sea as well as a major city where Tuscan artists gathered, gave much inspiration to the local painters in their creations.

The coastline was a popular place where they would go and paint. The glistening light of waves is a highlight of those pieces displayed in the second part on waterscapes.

While the third part exhibits paintings depicting people and their life during war time or in the countryside, the fourth part centers on both animals and still life.

Among the animal paintings, horses are a main theme and an important element in Naturalism creations.
For the last part, the exhibit will present some other pieces besides oil paintings, such as
prints and sketches which also show the artists’ pursuit of expressing light.
