展览简介

 

Introduction

 

“艺术家还要再努力”是杨诘苍2007年为他上海的个展所创作的霓虹灯作品。手书霓虹灯运用简洁且幽默的手法，一方面“还要再努力”折射出艺术创作中的热情与自我要求，另一方面作品意味着艺术的千变万化的力量。

 

如今，二十年后的霓虹灯手书，在2025年广东美术馆的个展中再度焕发新生，更被策展人杨天娜博士选作整个展览的题目。本次个展虽然囊括不同时期的经典代表作品，但不是艺术家的回顾展，而是杨诘苍对其艺术、人生和精神世界的理解和方法。

 

无论用什么媒材 （书法，绘画还是录像），都是宋画“三矾九染” 似的层层深化。观众将在展览中感受到他几十年来关于创作与自我修养的艺术旅程。

 

Artists Continue To Try Hard is the title of a neon light created by Yang Jiechang for his solo exhibition in Shanghai in 2007. The neon light that is mirroring Yang’s handwriting, with its concise and humorous style, addresses the passion and self-imposed demands of artistic creation and hints to the ever-changing power of art.Now, twenty years later, curator Martina Koeppel-Yang chooses this neon writing as the title of Yang’s solo exhibition held at the Guangdong Museum of Art in October  2025. 

 

While the exhibition includes representative works from different creative periods, it is not a retrospective, but rather a showcase of Yang Jiechang's understanding and approach to art, life and spirituality. Regardless of the medium he uses (calligraphy, painting or video), Yang’s art is deeply inspired by the so-called "three layers of alum and nine layers of colour" - painting technique of Song Dynasty. 

 

The exhibition thus proposes a glimpse into an artistic journey guided by the wish to look beyond the superficial layers of things.

杨诘苍，是自上世纪七八十年代以来在国内崛起的最杰出、最引为讨论的当代艺术家之一。1956年出生于广东佛山，1970年代至1980年代，接受过民间传统书画和学院科班的训练。杨诘苍的作品，包含多种艺术媒介，如绘画、书法、装置、行为和录像。在他的作品中，混合中国传统和当代艺术，他最关心的是如何在现如今的时代，活化和运用中国传统美学和思想。1989年在巴黎蓬皮杜艺术中心参加“大地魔术师”展览的现场创作，自始居住在法国巴黎和德国海德堡，37年来他的艺术创作一直活跃在世界各地。

 

Yang Jiechang is one of the most outstanding and widely discussed contemporary artists to emerge in China during the 1970s and 80s. Born in Foshan, Guangdong in 1956, he received training in both traditional folk painting and calligraphy as well as formal academic education from the 1970s to 1980s. Yang's work encompasses multiple artistic media, including painting, calligraphy, installation, performance, and video. In his work, which synthesizes Chinese tradition with contemporary art, his primary concern is how to revitalize and apply traditional Chinese aesthetics and thought in today's era. Since his participation in the "Magiciens de la Terre" exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1989, he has lived in Paris, France and Heidelberg, Germany, and his artistic creation has remained active worldwide for thirty-seven years.
