Press release

From September 19 till November 11 the Guangdong Museum of Art will host its first Dutch exhibition: From Musical Clock to Street Organ. For this typically Dutch exhibition some 50 mechanical musical instruments will be shipped in from the National Museum From Musical Clock to Street Organ in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

The National Museum from Musical Clock to Street Organ, Utrecht, The Netherlands, owns the largest collection of automatic musical instruments world-wide. From this collection 50 top-pieces from the period 1480 - 1930 have been selected to be exhibited in Guangzhou. They will all be played and demonstrated during special live-presentations throughout the whole exhibition period, even the “Jaquemarts Clock”, made in 1480, one of the oldest still playing instruments in the world.

The National Museum from Musical Clock to Street Organ is housed in the central mediaeval parish church in the old inner city of Utrecht., the heart of Holland. The museum is famous for its great number of pieces in perfect playing condition. These instruments are presented live during guided tours every hour. This way, the museum succeeds in keeping not only the instruments alive, but also the fascinating culture of music behind them. The combination of music, technology, history and anecdotes makes the museum attractive for visitors of all ages and all kinds; young and old, music lovers and specialists, collectors and clubs, thoughtful listeners and excited fans. Like tulips, wooden shoes, windmills and cheese, automatic music and especially street organs, are an essential part of the rich Dutch culture.

Guangzhou being the host of this exhibition is not coincidental. In the 18th century Guangzhou became one of the Chinese musical clock production centers. Combined with the fact that the province of Guangdong and the province of Utrecht share a Bond of Friendship this makes Guangzhou the obvious location for this first exhibition of its kind in China.

The exhibition will take place from September 19, 2007 through November 11, 2007 and will be combined with a trade mission organized by the Utrecht Chamber of Commerce and the Province of Utrecht and a concert organized by the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition.
On September 19 the Royal Commissioner of Utrecht and the Governor of Guangdong will open the exhibition. At this event 2005 Liszt Competition finalist Christiaan Kuyvenhoven will perform in a confrontation-concert, together with the famous automatically playing 1924 Steinway Reproduction Grand-piano from the Utrecht museum.

The exhibition will take place in one of the Guangdong Museum of Art’s large halls and in the central hall, where a large 1923 dance organ will be erected. Non-stop guided tours will be offered in both English and Chinese.
